History & Heritage
Named after 9th-century Silla scholar-poet Choe Chi-won (pen name Haeun), who carved the characters on a rock on Dongbaek Island, Haeundae is Korea’s premier coastal gateway, famous for festivals, swimming, and year-round coastal walks.
Dongbaekseom Island at the western edge is threaded with boardwalks through red camellia and pine forests, leading to the Princess Hwangok Mermaid statue and Choe Chi-won’s ancient rock inscription.
The Nurimaru APEC House hosted 21 heads of state during the 2005 summit, featuring terraces framing sweeping views of the Gwangan Diamond Suspension Bridge.
