History & Heritage
Formed in the 1950s by refugees fleeing the Korean War who built terraced homes on steep mountain slopes, Gamcheon was reborn in 2009 through a community art initiative that turned its labyrinthine lanes into a globally acclaimed cultural canvas.
The labyrinthine alleyways follow the contours of the mountain, creating intimate community stairwells that never block sunlight for neighbors.
The famous statue of The Little Prince and Desert Fox perches on a scenic parapet overlooking the port, becoming one of Korea’s most viral cultural photo spots.
