Inscribed on the UNESCO World Natural Heritage list in 2021 as part of "Getbol, Korean Tidal Flats", Suncheon Bay provides crucial stopover habitats along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway.
In a landmark conservation effort, Suncheon undergrounded power lines and expanded buffer zones to protect wintering hooded cranes.
In 2021, UNESCO inscribed the Suncheon Getbol as World Natural Heritage alongside three other Korean flat reserves.
