History & Heritage
Constructed in 674 AD by King Munmu following the unification of the Three Kingdoms, Donggung ("Eastern Palace") served as the crown prince’s residence and state banquet venue overlooking Wolji ("Pond that Reflects the Moon").
The pond was ingeniously designed with organic meandering shorelines and three islets so that visitors standing anywhere along the perimeter cannot see the edges, creating the illusion of an endless ocean.
During the 1975 dredging, researchers discovered a pristine intact wooden Silla boat, a 14-sided wooden drinking party die (Juryeonggu), and thousands of gilt-bronze artifacts revealing court life.
