History & Heritage
Founded in 751 AD under Prime Minister Kim Dae-seong during Unified Silla’s golden age, Bulguksa was conceived to materialize the Buddhist Pure Land on earth on the slopes of Mount Tohamsan.
The temple stone foundation was fitted without mortar to endure seismic activity, fronted by the Blue and White Cloud stone bridges symbolizing the crossing from the mundane to the spiritual realm.
In the central courtyard, the elaborately sculpted Dabotap pagoda faces the austere, classical Seokgatap, where archaeologists recovered the Mugujeonggwang Great Dharani Sutra, the world’s oldest woodblock print.

청운교 및 백운교 (국보)National Treasure No. 23, the only fully preserved arched stone staircase-bridges surviving from the Silla Kingdom.
