History & Heritage
Formed in 1944 by the construction of Cheongpyeong Dam, Nami Island is an eco-cultural oasis known as "Naminara Republic", welcoming over 3 million travelers annually.
Named after General Nami who died tragically at age 27 during the Joseon Dynasty after suppressing rebellions.
In 1965, visionary philanthropist Minn Byeong-do purchased the sandy wasteland and planted thousands of trees by hand.
