History & Heritage
Constructed between 1794 and 1796 by Joseon King Jeongjo to honor his father Crown Prince Sado and build an innovative planned city, Hwaseong was engineered by Silhak scholar Jeong Yak-yong utilizing the groundbreaking Geojunggi crane.
Every single stone, timber, tool, and laborer’s wage was recorded in the meticulous Hwaseong Seongyeok Uigwe royal records, enabling flawless historical restoration following damage in the Korean War.
The 5.74km defensive circuit encompasses four grand gates, observation posts, hidden sally ports, and the serene Banghwasuryujeong pavilion over Yongyeon pond.
