History & Heritage

Set high above the Geumgang River in Gongju, this mountain fortress served as the capital citadel of Baekje during its Ungjin period, preserving royal palace foundations and banquet pavilions.

Following the fall of Hanseong in 475 CE, King Munju relocated the Baekje capital to Ungjin, constructing this mountain bastion.

The fortress witnessed the cultural golden age of King Muryeong before the capital moved downstream to Buyeo in 538 CE.
