Daily Etiquette

Essential Korean Daily Etiquette & Community Norms

한국의 생활 예절 (Korean Etiquette)

Significance

Navigating Korean society smoothly requires understanding fundamental norms around respect, shared public spaces, waste recycling, and apartment living.

Historical Origin

Derived from communal agrarian cooperation (Dure / 품앗이) and Neo-Confucian emphasis on filial piety, harmony, and consideration for the elderly.

Practical Guide for Foreign Residents

1. Greetings: Bow gently at approximately 15° to 30° when greeting equals or elders. 2. Shoes: Always take off shoes at the entryway (Hyeon-gwan) before stepping onto home or heated Ondol floors. 3. Dining: Wait for the eldest person to lift their spoon first. Do not lift rice bowls off the table. 4. Waste: Separate trash rigorously: standard volume-rate bags (Jongnyangje), food waste (Eumsikmul), and recyclables (paper, plastic, cans). 5. Apartments: Keep footsteps and washing machine noise to a minimum after 22:00 to prevent inter-floor disputes (Cheunggan Soeum).
