International students in South Korea reside under strict legal statutes enforced by the Korea Immigration Service (Ministry of Justice). Understanding the distinctions between visa classifications, maintaining compliance, and following mandatory part-time work permit procedures are vital to safeguarding legal status.

Distinguishing Between D-2 and D-4 Status

  1. D-2 Regular Degree Visa: Granted for formal degree candidates (Associate degree D-2-1, Bachelor D-2-2, Master D-2-3, Doctorate D-2-4, and Exchange/Research D-2-5/6). Authorized stay ranges between one to two years per renewal depending on degree level and academic standing.
  2. D-4 General Training (Language) Visa: Granted for trainees enrolled at accredited university Korean language institutes (D-4-1). Stay periods are typically approved in six-month increments, conditional upon maintaining above 80% term attendance.

Foreign Resident Registration (ARC) and Address Reporting

Any foreign national staying beyond 90 days must make a reservation via HiKorea (hikorea.go.kr) to apply for an Alien Registration Card (ARC) at their jurisdiction's immigration office. Under Article 36 of the Immigration Act, any change of domestic address must be officially reported within 14 days; failure results in steep administrative fines.

Statutory Rules for Part-Time Employment (시간제취업)

International students do not hold automatic work rights upon arrival. Engaging in unauthorized employment is subject to immediate visa cancellation:

  • Eligibility Window: D-4 language students may apply only after completing 6 months of sojourn in Korea. D-2 students are eligible from their initial semester.
  • Pre-Approval Requirement: Students must complete the standard Part-time Work Confirmation Form signed by both the employer and their university international student coordinator, and obtain formal authorization from the Korea Immigration Service prior to beginning work.
  • Permitted Hours: Undergraduate students are permitted between 10 to 25 hours per week during academic semesters (determined strictly by TOPIK level and GPA). Full-time hours during vacations require prior endorsement.
  • Strictly Prohibited Fields: Manufacturing, factory production lines, motorcycle parcel/food delivery, and nightlife entertainment venues are legally prohibited for foreign student employment under statutory immigration guidelines.

Sojourn Extension & Post-Graduation Transition

Renewals are processed on HiKorea with enrollment proof, transcript GPA records, and financial balance verification. Upon graduation, eligible degree holders can transition to the D-10-1 Job Seeker visa for up to two years to seek corporate employment and qualify for the E-7 professional visa.

Caution: Please verify directly with the official responsible authority for latest requirements.
