The Korean War caused extensive damage to housing, infrastructure and production. After the 1953 armistice, rebuilding and restoring livelihoods were central challenges.

Reconstruction was not an instant success story. Education, investment, institutions and export markets played roles, alongside social costs and changes in working and family life.

The true foundation of the miracle was human capital. Rooted in centuries of Confucian reverence for scholarship, Korean families viewed education as the only guaranteed path out of poverty.

Expanding education and vocational training was one element of industrial change. Workers in Korea and overseas supported households and developed skills for growing manufacturing and service industries.

Beginning with light industries like footwear and textiles in the 1960s to accumulate capital, Korea executed a daring pivot toward heavy and chemical industries in the 1970s.

Pohang Iron and Steel (POSCO) was built despite global skepticism; Hyundai constructed the world’s largest integrated shipyard in Ulsan; and automotive engineers rolled out the domestic Pony. By the 1980s, daring investments in memory chips laid the foundation for Korea to lead the global silicon age.
