1. Volcanic Landscapes on the World Heritage List

Jeju is a volcanic island south of the Korean peninsula. Mount Hallasan, Seongsan Ilchulbong and lava tubes offer different perspectives on the processes that shaped its terrain.

Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes entered UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2007. The inscription covers specific sites and does not mean every location is open to visitors; check local access restrictions and opening information.

2. The Haenyeo: Women of the Sea and Intangible Living Heritage

Among Jeju’s most inspiring cultural treasures are the Haenyeo ("sea women"). For centuries, these free-divers have plunged into chilly coastal depths of up to 20 meters without oxygen tanks to harvest abalone, sea urchins, and conch.

Inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2016, Haenyeo culture models ecological sustainability: divers observe strict self-imposed closed seasons, share earnings with elder divers, and emit a haunting whistle known as "Sumbisori" as they breach the surface to expel carbon dioxide.

3. The Olle Walking Trails: Healing Amid Subtropical Nature

With its subtropical climate, signature sweet Hallabong tangerines, and emerald beaches like Hyeopjae, Jeju is Korea’s premier sanctuary of relaxation and slow travel.

Jeju Olle routes connect villages, coastal landscapes and volcanic terrain. Difficulty and access differ; choose a route using current operator information and check the weather before setting out.
