History & Heritage
Situated at the base of Mount Mudeungsan in Buk-gu, Gwangju, this national shrine features the 40-meter Memorial Tower, exhibition halls, and resting places of pro-democracy activists.
In May 1980, citizens of Gwangju rose against martial law and military dictatorship, sacrificing their lives for civil liberties.
Victims initially buried in Mangwol-dong were reinterred here in 1997 following national recognition and democratization.
